Alpine Drought Prediction: Enhancing the Alps’ readiness to cope with drought and promote sustainable water management
A-DROP investigates the changes of climate extremes, especially droughts, and their impacts on various sectors such as agriculture, energy production, tourism, drinking water supply and other hydrologically relevant ecosystem services. The focus is on the Alpine region, a region that is increasingly affected by climate change. A-DROP generates high-resolution climate and hydrological data, which form the basis for improved monitoring and forecasting of droughts and thus play a central role in regional water management systems.
LMU provides regional climate model simulations that are used to project the effects of climate change on pan-alpine drought dynamics. This data is used to drive impact models which are employed in the project’s case studies to develop adaptation measures and to minimize risks.
LMU is also involved in the project's “Educational Program”, translating project results into materials to support education for sustainable development in an international context and co-organizing corresponding educational events with the project partners in Austria, France, Italy and Slovenia.
